Recently, Health Canada’s Food Administration has completed a pre-market safety assessment of food additives that requires approval of the use of lycopene in certain non-carbonated sweet water-based beverages and sports beverages with added vitamins and mineral nutrients Extract.


The results of the pre-market evaluation support the safety of extracting lycopene from tomatoes, that is, the approval of lycopene for use in non-carbonated sweet water-based beverages and sports drinks containing vitamins and mineral nutrients. The regulation was adopted in March 2020 Effective on the 12th.


In Canada, lycopene extracted from tomatoes has been approved as a food colorant for various foods, including certain beverages. The following is the detailed application range and application dose of tomato extract lycopene currently approved in Canada.
